The Short Answer

Hail and wind damage to an Indianapolis roof is often invisible from the ground — the functional damage is bruising, where a hailstone fractures the shingle mat beneath the granules, and broken sealant bond, where wind separates shingle courses that still lie flat. John Beal Roofing provides free documented hail and storm inspections across the Indianapolis metro, with photographs you keep whether or not you file. We are family-run since 1947, BBB A+ rated. We do not negotiate claims and we never absorb deductibles. Call (317) 726-6000.

Hail damage roof inspection with a marked test square in Indianapolis

What Hail Damage Actually Looks Like

There is a real difference between cosmetic marking and functional damage, and it is the difference between a roof that needs replacing and one that does not. Functional hail damage is a bruise: the impact fractures the fiberglass mat under the granule surface, creating a soft spot you can feel with a thumb. That fracture is where the shingle will fail, because water and freeze-thaw cycling work on it from that point forward. Granule loss around the bruise accelerates it by exposing the asphalt to UV.

Cosmetic marking — scuffs, displaced granules without mat fracture, marks on soft metals like gutters and vents — looks alarming and often means nothing functional. A contractor who calls every mark on your roof damage is selling. A contractor who says everything looks fine from the driveway is not looking.

The corroborating evidence matters too. Hail that damaged your roof also damaged soft metal on the property: gutter aprons, downspouts, vents, air conditioner fins, mailboxes. When we inspect, we look at those as well, because they establish the storm's actual severity independent of what the shingles show.

Wind lifted and missing shingles on an Indianapolis roof

Wind Damage and the Sealant Bond Problem

Straight-line wind is more common in central Indiana than tornadoes and does far more cumulative roof damage. The obvious damage is visible: lifted or missing ridge cap, peeled rake edges, blown-off shingles. The damage almost everyone misses is the broken sealant bond.

Asphalt shingles bond to the course below via a heat-activated adhesive strip. Wind flexes the tab, and once that bond breaks the shingle lies flat again and looks completely normal from the ground — but it is no longer sealed. Wind-driven rain now gets under it, and the next significant storm takes it off entirely. This is why a roof can look untouched after one storm and lose shingles in the next one that was not even as severe.

Finding it requires hands on the roof, lifting tabs on the windward slopes to check bond. That is a real part of our inspection and it is the single most valuable thing a post-storm inspection produces.

Our Position on Insurance Claims

We inspect thoroughly and document with photographs. We give you a written scope of what the roof actually needs. That is the honest, useful thing a roofing contractor can provide.

We do not negotiate claims on your behalf, and we do not absorb, waive, discount or otherwise cover your deductible. Contractors who offer to eat a deductible are proposing insurance fraud, and homeowners have been prosecuted alongside contractors for it. If someone offers, that tells you what else they are willing to do on your roof.

We also will not tell you to file a claim on damage that does not warrant one. A denied claim can still appear in your claims history. If your Indianapolis roof has cosmetic marking and no functional damage, we will tell you that in writing and you can decide from there.

The Storm-Chaser Problem in Central Indiana

After every significant hail event in the Indianapolis metro, out-of-state crews arrive within days. They knock doors aggressively, offer to inspect immediately, and frequently produce alarming findings. Some are legitimate operations working storms. Many are not, and the pattern is consistent: high-pressure signing, work done fast by whoever is available, a warranty from an entity that will not exist locally in two years.

The defense is simple. Do not sign anything the day someone knocks. Get an independent documented inspection from a company with a verifiable local history. Check how long the business has operated under the same name. And be specifically wary of anyone who volunteers to handle the deductible.

We have been a Midwest roofing company since 1947. That is the entire pitch: when you call about the roof in year four, someone answers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my Indianapolis roof has hail damage?

Usually you cannot tell from the ground. Functional damage is mat bruising under the granules, which requires hands-on inspection of the roof surface. Our documented inspection is free and you keep the photographs.

How long do I have to file a hail claim in Indiana?

Policies vary and many have time limits measured from the date of loss. Check your specific policy, and do not sit on suspected damage — the longer you wait, the harder it is to attribute damage to a particular storm.

Will you help me with my insurance claim?

We will document the damage thoroughly and provide a written scope and photographs. We do not negotiate claims on your behalf, and we never cover any part of a deductible.

A contractor offered to waive my deductible. Is that legal?

No. It is insurance fraud, and homeowners have been prosecuted along with contractors. Treat the offer as a warning about everything else that company does.

Does cosmetic hail marking need to be replaced?

Not usually. Displaced granules without a fractured mat are not functional damage. We will tell you plainly which one you have, with photos.

Should I get an inspection even if my roof looks fine?

After a significant hail or wind event, yes. The two most common forms of real damage — mat bruising and broken sealant bond — are both invisible from the ground.
