A roof is a system that includes the attic beneath it, and unbalanced ventilation is the leading cause of premature roof failure in Indianapolis homes. Air must enter low at the soffit and exit high at the ridge. When intake is blocked — most often by insulation pushed into the eaves — the attic superheats in summer and cooks the shingles from below, and in winter uneven heat loss drives ice damming at the eave. How Attic Ventilation Is Supposed to Work
The principle is simple: cool outside air enters low through soffit vents, rises as it warms, and exits high through a ridge vent or roof-mounted exhaust. That continuous movement carries heat and moisture out of the attic.
The critical word is balanced. Exhaust without adequate intake does not work — a ridge vent with blocked soffits cannot pull air from nowhere, so it starts drawing conditioned air out of the house through ceiling gaps instead, which costs you on the utility bill and does nothing for the attic.
Mixing exhaust types causes its own problem. A ridge vent combined with powered attic fans or gable vents can short-circuit, with the fan pulling air in through the ridge vent rather than from the soffits, leaving the far reaches of the attic completely unventilated.
The Insulation Mistake
This is the one we find constantly around Indianapolis. A homeowner adds attic insulation — genuinely a good idea — and the installer blows it out to the edges, packing it into the eaves and completely blocking the soffit intake. The attic is now better insulated and no longer breathing.
The result shows up two ways. In summer the attic runs far hotter than it should and the shingles above it degrade years faster than their rating. In winter, heat trapped against the underside of the roof melts snow on the upper slope; that meltwater runs down to the cold eave, which is still at outside temperature, and refreezes into an ice dam. Water then backs up under the shingles.
The fix is baffles — rigid channels installed at each rafter bay that hold the insulation back and keep an air path open from the soffit up into the attic. They are inexpensive and they are best installed during a roof replacement when access and staging are already handled.
Ice Dams in Central Indiana
Indianapolis gets the exact freeze-thaw pattern that produces ice dams: snow accumulation followed by temperatures hovering around freezing. When the roof surface is warmed unevenly by escaping attic heat, that snow melts high and refreezes low.
The ice ridge at the eave then holds standing water behind it, and standing water finds its way under shingle courses that were only ever designed to shed running water. That is how a roof that has never leaked in a rainstorm leaks in January.
Two defenses. First, fix the cause: air sealing and balanced ventilation so the roof deck stays close to outside temperature. Second, defend the eave: ice-and-water membrane installed at the eaves and in valleys during replacement, which we do as standard. The membrane does not prevent the dam — it prevents the dam from getting into your house.
What We Check and What It Costs to Fix
On every inspection we look at intake at the soffit, exhaust at the ridge, whether exhaust types are mixed, whether baffles exist, and the underside of the decking for the staining and rust-streaked nails that indicate chronic attic moisture.
Correcting ventilation during a roof replacement is a modest line item — baffles, added or corrected intake, proper ridge vent — relative to the cost of the roof itself. It is also the single change that most reliably determines whether you get the shingle's rated life or two-thirds of it.
Any bid that does not mention ventilation is quoting a roof, not a roof system. It is a fair question to ask every contractor you get a number from.
